Are you interested in adopting a pet from SPVAR?

Our adoption process is comprehensive to ensure that our animals are placed in loving and secure homes. It may take a couple of days for the adoption coordinator to be in touch due to the high volume of applications received daily. Please be patient and remember to check your emails and voicemails.

Step 1- Fill out an application!

Please fill out an application form. Our volunteers will review your application and reach out to your landlord, 2 references, and veterinarian for verification. Kindly anticipate communications from our team via email or phone.

Step 2 - Home Evaluation:

Upon approval of your application, we will schedule a home visit to assess the environment and identify any potential safety concerns for the pet. If any issues are identified and cannot be resolved, we may need to halt the application process. In instances where in-person home checks are not feasible, a virtual tour option is available. Please submit 30-second videos showcasing your home indoors and outdoors to southernpawsva@gmail.com.

Step 3 - Introduction Meeting:

This phase involves introducing your family to our available pets. While we aim to accommodate your preference in selecting a pet for the initial meeting, we may suggest alternative pets based on availability. Multiple meet and greet sessions can be arranged to ensure the compatibility of your family with the pet. Some prospective adopters choose to prepare their home with necessary supplies before finalizing the adoption, while others may proceed with adoption on the same day. Our volunteers will provide guidance and information on a case-by-case basis. In some instances, meet and greets may take place during adoption events, allowing all household members to interact with the foster pet.

Exploring "foster to adopt" option:

This program offers a trial period of 14 days, during which you can bring the pet home to assess its compatibility with your family. If the pet is not a suitable match, we will accept the return of the pet. We advise waiting a few days before making a final decision, as some pets may require a longer adjustment period. A foster to adopt contract will be provided before taking the pet home. Should an extension beyond 2 weeks be needed, please inform the rescue for approval. Any necessary vet visits or medication administration during the trial period will be coordinated and covered by the rescue organization.
